Snow Track Monitoring Project

Project Details

GNWT's Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) and the Sahtu Renewable Resource Boad (SRRB) is using Trailmark Office and Mobile for a collaborative wildlife monitoring program entitled "Multi-species monitoring using winter wildlife track surveys in the Sahtu Settlement Region" that uses surveys of wildlife tracks in the snow to measure changes in abundance and distribution of species such as boreal woodland caribou, moose, wolves and other furbearers. Wildlife monitors from communities are hired to conduct surveys by snowmobile along trails and seismic lines. Each time a wildlife track is seen crossing the trail, Trailmark's mobile app (running on ultra-rugged handhelds from Juniper Systems) is used to record and photoghraph wildlife tracks.
