Cultural and Historical Research Assistant (Co-op)


We are looking for a co-op student to join our team for 4-8 months. We are accepting applicants who have a background in anthropology, Indigenous studies, history, or geography. Preference is given to Indigenous applicants. If you identify as an Indigenous applicant, please state clearly on your cover letter or resume. Trailmark Systems is a software and consulting company. Trailmark Cloud is an all-in-one innovative toolkit used by Indigenous communities to protect and manage their heritage and traditional territories. This includes a customizable digital archive that can store unstructured multi-media information and link text to locations. Trailmark consulting offers trans-disciplinary support in a wide range of areas such as community-based research and traditional use studies, with the intention of building capacity and partnering with our clients in their goals and endeavors. Our small and ambitious team includes software developers, geographers, environmental scientists, cultural historians, traditional use specialists, and GIS analysts. We work with Indigenous communities across Canada, with much of our work of late focused on BC’s South Coast and the Arctic. With Trailmark, you will receive mentorship and real-world experience in the cultural and historical research aspects of this work. We do our best to create an experience that caters to your specific interests and skillset within that, and want to know what excites you. This job can be performed remotely from home on a flexible work schedule. Students who reside near our offices in Victoria or Haida Gwaii are strongly encouraged to apply. Tasks include:

  • Archival/historical research
  • Database organization
  • Historical GIS/mapping
  • Qualitative analysis
  • Qualifications:
  • This position is open for undergraduate students who are part of a co-op program* with a background in anthropology, Indigenous studies, history, or geography
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and historical experience in Canada
  • Analytical and writing skills
  • Detail oriented re. research planning and records management
  • Time management and organizational skills to work on multiple concurrent projects, work independently, and adaptability to shift tasks or directions
  • Experience conducting archival, web, and other forms of research
  • GIS skills are an asset
